Adaptive lighting in mining: safety in the transition between light and dark

The passage between the natural light outside and the darkness inside a mine is one of the most demanding moments for the human eye. The pupil needs time to adapt, and during those seconds vision drops sharply — precisely where vehicles, machinery and personnel move. Adaptive lighting exists to solve exactly that problem.

The problem: glare and visual adaptation

Entering a gallery, the eye goes from tens of thousands of lux on the surface to a few hundred inside. That abrupt transition causes temporary glare blindness, and the opposite effect on the way out. In environments where a moment of poor visibility has serious consequences, lighting cannot be a fixed parameter.

What an adaptive system solves

An adaptive lighting system gradually modulates intensity across the transition zone, following the eye's natural adaptation. Its essentials:
