Adaptive lighting in mining: safer transitions between daylight and darkness

Moving from daylight outside to the darkness inside a mine places considerable demands on human vision. The pupil needs time to adjust, and visibility can drop sharply for several seconds precisely where vehicles, machinery and people are moving. Adaptive lighting addresses this problem.

The challenge: glare and visual adaptation

On entering a tunnel, the eye moves from tens of thousands of lux at the surface to only a few hundred inside. This abrupt change can cause temporary loss of vision; on leaving, the reverse transition creates a similar challenge. Where a moment of poor visibility can have serious consequences, lighting levels cannot remain fixed.

What an adaptive system does

An adaptive lighting system changes light levels gradually through the transition zone, supporting the eye’s natural adjustment. Its key features include:

• A gradual lighting gradient between the outside and inside, without sudden changes.
• Calibrated light levels based on the time of day and ambient light.
• Immediate response and the instant start-up provided by LED technology.
• Uniform lighting that avoids dark areas and excessive contrast.
