Adaptive Lighting System for Mines

Overview:

This adaptive lighting system is designed to improve safety and visibility inside a mine. It automatically adjusts the output of the floodlights installed in the 100–150-metre zone around the tunnel entrance, helping workers adapt to changing light levels when entering or leaving the mine.

Main components:

1. Electrical control panel:

• Supplies power to and controls the system components.
• Adjusts the floodlight output using a 1–10 V control signal to provide a smooth transition between light levels.

2. Signal controller:

• Receives the signal from the light meter and adjusts the floodlights' power input according to outdoor light levels.
• Processes input signals and sets the output to the required intensity.

3. Light meter:

• Measures outdoor illuminance and sends a signal to the control panel to adjust the lighting.
• Offers selectable measurement ranges for conditions from very low light to direct sunlight.

4. Floodlight network:

• Installed along 100–150 metres at the tunnel entrance.
• The output is varied by a signal from the electrical control panel, supporting gradual visual adaptation on entering or leaving the mine.

How the system works:

• Entering or leaving the mine in bright daylight: when outdoor light levels are high, the floodlight network provides intermediate lighting levels between full daylight and the darkness inside. Light levels change gradually along the installation, helping people adapt on entry and reducing glare on exit.
• Entering or leaving the mine in low outdoor light: at dusk or at night, the system reduces floodlight output to provide a smooth transition between outside and inside.
